Dahlgren's location in Eastern Virginia, between the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers, provides easy access to a multitude of cultural and recreational activities to suit any taste. The immediate Dahlgren area in King George County, Virginia, provides a rural setting with nearby fishing and boating on the Potomac River. The surrounding community is rich in history featuring the birthplaces of George Washington, James Madison, James Monroe, and Robert E. Lee within a short drive. Nearby are several plantations, and state and national parks.

The historic town of Fredericksburg, which is less than 30 miles west of Dahlgren, provides a slice of American history with its famous battlefield and Civil War era commemoratives. Located between Stafford and Spotsylvania Counties in Virginia, the Fredericksburg area is one of the fastest growing parts of the state with high quality schools, a modern hospital and extensive shopping and entertainment opportunities. Many employees live in this area.

Charles County, Maryland, which is across the Potomac River to the north of Dahlgren, is another rapidly developing community where many JWAC employees make their home. This part of Southern Maryland is situated in an agricultural setting surrounding convenient pockets of technology along with commercial/shopping centers, several top-echelon school systems, and is known for its extensive Amish and Mennonite community.

If you are looking for the culture and excitement of a large city, Washington D.C. and Richmond, Virginia are just a one-hour drive from Dahlgren. For other recreation opportunities, the Atlantic Ocean beaches, the Blue Ridge Mountains, Paramount's Kings Dominion and Busch Gardens Amusement Parks, Colonial Williamsburg, and the beautiful Shenandoah Valley are all just a few hours away.

JWAC is a tenant command of Naval Support Facility, Dahlgren. The base offers a wide variety of recreational activities and other services: numerous athletic leagues; a nine-hole golf course; aquatics center; gymnasium; tennis courts; flying club; bowling alley; boat slips; library; youth activity center; hobby shops; Auto Skills center; child care services; and base credit union.
